Maguk Gorge

South part of Kakadu, dry season only - around 4hours drive from Darwin.
There are the sandy lower pools which isn't too far from the car park and then the upper pools which are a bit of a hike. I prefer the upper pools, there are plenty of different plunge pools that you can have all to yourself, and you can look over the waterfall to the lower pools. These are better at the start of the dry season, so there is plenty of water to splash in.
I recommend wearing runners or hiking shoes, bit of a rock scramble in some parts, and it can get very hot - best to do it in the morning or afternoon.
There is camping around here, but I have never stayed.
We stay at Cooinda Lodge, which is about an hour away. Has a pool and bistro, lots of dingos at night! There are cabins if you don't want to camp - during the dry season they sometimes have 'glamping' set up. They also do cruises along the Yellow River - definitely recommend the dawn cruise - we saw crocs, wild brumby, buffalo, bore and lots of birds. But if you want to see lots of crocs, do the 9/10am cruise - this is when they wake up to sun bath.
