Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge)

We love camping here - huge camp grounds with good facilities. If you don't want to camp there are cabins or 'tent demountable' you can stay in, this is also where Cicada Lodge is. Cicada Lodge is good for a romantic weekend away, but I would only recommend it if you can get a sale or 'territory rates', which is usually in off season.
The camp ground is where the Nitmiulk visitors centre is, so you can get all your hiking info, book any tours, and check what waterways are open.
Best to do at least two nights here. On one of the morning hike to Southern Rockhole before the heat kicks in, but before you go book the ferry to come back along the gorge. The hike is easy in some parts, but towards the end it turns into a bit of a rock scramble - I recommend hiking shoes or runners. There are water stops along the way. Make sure that Southern Rockhole is swimmable - towards the end of the dry season all the water is stagnant and not very nice. The ferry back is $12, and if you don't want to book a cruise along the gorge, this is a much cheaper option.
There is a great look out for sunset, ask at the visitors centre, make sure you take a head torch to get back and some wine!
The kiosk does really good dinners, and some nights in the dry they have live music.
It's a 40 min drive from here to Mataranka, which you can spend a day at. There are two swimming spots, Elsey and Bitter Springs - extremely clear water, take your gopro!
On the drive home we usually stop at Edith for another swim.
